Another nonpartisan organization ranked Congresswoman Elaine Luria as one of the most effective lawmakers in Congress, and the most effective lawmaker in the Virginia Congressional Delegation. In a new report, the Center for Effective Lawmaking ranked Congresswoman Luria as the 10th-most effective Democratic lawmaker in the U.S. House of Representatives during the 116th Congress, one of only two freshmen named in the top-10. Congresswoman Luria was the second-most effective freshman lawmaker, according to the report.
“I am humbled to be honored for my work on behalf of Coastal Virginians, and I’ll continue to be an advocate for working families, our veterans, and the men and women serving our country in the armed forces each and every day,” Congresswoman Luria said. “There is much more work to do, including rebuilding our economy as we emerge from the pandemic, protecting our coastline, and revitalizing American manufacturing and shipbuilding. I will always put the people of my district first as I work across the aisle to get things done.”
In the 116th Congress, Congresswoman Luria helped pass:
-The Gold Star Family Tax Relief Act, which provides urgent relief to Gold Star Families impacted by the 2017 tax law that caused America’s most heroic families to see drastic tax increases.
-The Chesapeake Bay Program Reauthorization Act, which authorizes a total of $455 million in appropriations for the Chesapeake Bay Program over the next five years to help states keep the Bay clean and thriving.
-The Virginia Beach Strong Act, which ensures that donations to families of victims of the 2019 Virginia Beach mass shooting are tax-deductible.
-Legislation to name a Virginia Beach post office after Keith Cox, to pay tribute to a hero who died while saving the lives of many colleagues by helping them find a safe place to hide during the 2019 Virginia Beach mass shooting.
-The Veterans Compensation Cost of Living Acts of 2019 and 2020, which puts more money in the pockets of American veterans by increasing compensation rates for certain benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
-The VA Website Accessibility Act, which will make VA websites functional for veterans living with hearing or vision loss.
-Military Pilots Cancer Incidence Study Act, to require DOD to enter into an agreement with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to study incidence and mortality rates of pilots from all services, which will help determine the appropriate age to begin screening pilots as young as 30 for different forms of cancer.
-The Relocation Expense Parity Act, which provides financial relief for certain federal civilian employees who have to relocate for work purposes.
-The Nuclear Energy Leadership Act, which encourages further development of advanced nuclear energy programs to create high-quality jobs, strengthens national security, reduce foreign energy dependence, and promote emissions-free energy.
“Of the 96 freshmen in the 116th U.S. House of Representatives, we found that 25 exceeded expectations as lawmakers,” the report states. “Those freshmen scored in ways that reflected typical party differences, with majority-party Democrats outperforming minority-party Republicans. Topping the list are Reps. Joe Neguse and Elaine Luria, both of whom were also featured on the top ten list for House Democrats.”
