VA-02 added to 2020 Environmental Majority Makers Program
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Today, Congresswoman Elaine Luria’s campaign announced the endorsement of League of Conservation Voters Action Fund and her addition to their 2020 Environmental Majority Makers program. LCV Action Fund’s Environmental Majority Makers program is dedicated to defending the pro-environment House majority in the 2020 election cycle.
“LCV Action Fund is proud to endorse Congresswoman Elaine Luria for reelection because she has been fighting to protect our coasts from dangerous offshore drilling and climate change’s impacts since day one in Congress,” said Tiernan Sittenfeld, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs for LCV Action Fund. “She knows firsthand how pollution and sea level rise threaten lives and livelihoods in the Chesapeake Bay region, and she is fighting back by co-sponsoring legislation to ban offshore drilling and to honor America’s global commitments to climate action.”
Fulfilling her campaign promise to protect Virginia’s coast from offshore drilling, Congresswoman Luria co-introduced the bipartisan Defend Our Coast Act to prohibit offshore drilling off of Virginia’s coast. Earlier this month, the Congresswoman joined constituents and local officials in opposing the Trump Administration’s controversial Atlantic Coast drilling proposal at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s offshore drilling town hall. Congresswoman Luria led the House’s effort to fund the Chesapeake Bay Program and secured critical language within this year’s National Defense Authorization Act to initiate mitigation projects related to sea-level rise and recurrent flooding in Hampton Roads.
“As the area of Virginia most on the frontlines of the climate crisis, Hampton Roads needs strong leadership on climate action now, more than ever. Congresswoman Elaine Luria has brought that leadership to the 2nd District in a big way, while also being a steady champion of the Chesapeake Bay and fighting the Trump Administration’s flawed plans to drill for oil and gas off our coast,” said Michael Town, Executive Director of the Virginia League of Conservation Voters. “We look forward to continuing to work with her in Congress to protect our environment, grow our economy and safeguard public health.”
Congresswoman Elaine Luria represents Virginia’s Second Congressional District, which includes all of Accomack and Northampton Counties, the cities of Virginia Beach and Williamsburg, as well as portions of Norfolk, Hampton, and York and James City Counties.
