Republican Congressman Scott Taylor Votes to Sabotage Virginians’ Health Care

July 12, 2018

VIRGINIA BEACH – Today, Elaine Luria condemned Congressman Scott Taylor for his continued assault on Virginians’ health care and his support for another partisan effort that will undermine access to quality health care for his constituents

Last night, Congressman Taylor voted for a spending bill that cuts $473 million from the basic functioning of state health care exchanges and blocks funding for the program that helps Virginians sign up for health insurance coverage. This deliberate, partisan attack on state health care exchanges would reduce enrollment and increase confusion for those seeking insurance coverage.

“This is just the latest in a long string of partisan attacks that Congressman Taylor has launched on our healthcare system, and his actions have already led insurers to propose huge premium hikes on Virginia families,” said Elaine Luria. “For as long as he remains in office, Taylor will be a threat to our health care, and this community deserves a representative who will work on real solutions to increase health care access and reduce costs.”

In his short time in Congress, Taylor has launched attack after attack on Virginians’ access to quality, affordable health care:

  • Voted for the Republican health care repeal bill that would have stripped health care coverage from over 45,000 of his own constituents.
  • Voted to repeal the individual mandate as part of the GOP tax bill, which has already directly led Virginia insurers to propose massive premium increases on Virginia families and gutted protections for those with pre-existing conditions.
  • Voted in favor of a $7 billion cut to the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and an $800 million cut to Medicare and Medicaid.
