VIRGINIA BEACH — Elaine Luria, owner of Mermaid Factory and a retired Navy commander, announced Monday at her store’s Laskin Road location that she is seeking the Democratic nomination to run against Rep. Scott Taylor.

“I led my Navy command and run my small business on the simple philosophy of ‘Be good. Do good work,’” Luria, 42, said in a statement. “That’s what most Americans wake up in the morning and try to do. Because in America if you work hard and play by the rules, you expect that you and your family will have an opportunity to succeed. But today, too many Americans are working hard and getting less. That’s because politicians in Washington aren’t looking out for them.”

Luria was introduced at the launch of her Second Congressional District campaign by state Sen. Lynnwood Lewis, Virginia Beach Democratic committee chairman Dave Belote, and Arielle Griffin, a former Naval officer, who served under Luria.

Luria, who was born in Alabama, owns Mermaid Factory, which sells mermaids and dolphins made of clay at locations in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. Luria retired from the Navy last June after 20 years.

The 2nd District includes all of the city of Virginia Beach and parts of the cities of Norfolk, Hampton, and Newport News. It also encompasses Accomack, Northampton and York counties, the City of Williamsburg and parts of James City County.
